November 07, 2006 - Anderson man charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend
The Anderson man charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend this weekend is now in the Anderson County jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Anderson Police on Sunday arrested and charged Rodney Lee Thompson of 407 Buena Vista Ave. with murder.

His girlfriend, Carmencita Turman, 28, died at approximately 8:45 a.m. of a traumatic brain injury in the neuro intensive care unit at AnMed Health, Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said.

Mr. Thompson, 36, had an arraignment hearing Monday morning before Anderson Municipal Judge Hugh Welborn, said Linda Dudley, public information officer for the Anderson Police Department.

City judges cannot set bond in cases where the crime could carry a sentence up to life in prison, so municipal judges simply explain the defendants charges and the defendant can choose whether to be represented by a public defender.

Mr. Thompson did request a public defender, Ms. Dudley said.

A general sessions court judge will need to set a bond for Mr. Thompson once his attorney requests a general sessions hearing, she said.

Paramedics responded to a 911 call from the couples home at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday and found Ms. Turman unresponsive, Mr. Shore said.

It appeared as though she had been beaten, so Anderson police were called in to investigate, Mr. Shore said.
